The challenge
Danderyd Hospital is one of Sweden’s largest emergency hospitals and the largest maternity hospital in Northern Europe. It provides university-level care, with specialist care in internal medicine, cardiology, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, surgery and urology.
Every year, about 46,000 vacant shifts come in from all of the hospital’s departments and clinics. Every one has to be staffed, and every change to an existing shift has to be handled.
The solution
The hospital gathered its temporary staff in an internal pool in Bemlo and runs its own staffing centre with five coordinators. Departments publish their vacant shifts in the system, where pool staff see and apply for them, and the coordinators fill them.
We manage approximately 46,000 shifts a year, including everything from changes to existing shifts to new shifts coming in from all units. With Bemlo’s system support for the internal pool, we have 75 percent less administration when it comes to staffing and scheduling our temporary staff.

Since the rollout, the hospital has increased the share of shifts filled by its own staff by 25 percent, while external staffing has gone down. The time spent on booking has fallen by 75 percent.
Together, the system and the internal staffing centre save SEK 13 million a year in staffing costs. The calculation assumes an average hourly-employee salary of SEK 32,000 a month, external staff at about SEK 600 an hour and a staffing centre of five coordinators.
